The Speaking Voice

 

Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our Lord stands forever.

The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing.  The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.

 

Psalm 33:6-9

6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
    their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
7 He gathers the waters of the sea into jars[a];
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord;
    let all the people of the world revere him.
9 For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded, and it stood firm.

 

Psalm 46:10

Be still and know that I am God;

          I will be exalted among the nations,

          I will be exalted in the earth.

 

         

Prayer

   Lord, teach me to listen.  The times are noisy and my ears are weary with the thousand raucous sounds which continuously assault them.  Give me the spirit of the boy Samuel when he said to You, “Speak, for your servant hears.” Let me hear You speaking in my heart.  Let me get used to the sound of Your voice, that its tones may be familiar when the sounds of earth die away and the only sound will be the music of Your speaking voice.  Amen.
